This article is for TEACHERS.

For generations, educators and parents have guided young people, teaching them how to be responsible citizens. More recently, as technology has become part of our daily lives, the digital world has become another community, and it is clear that students need to learn how to navigate that world responsibly and respectfully. This is what is known as digital citizenship.

The Snapplify team has always been passionate about digital education and we want you to know that we are here to support teachers and parents as you help children and young adults to understand their rights and limitations online.

Why is teaching digital citizenship important?

  • Prepare students for the workplace – and our ever-changing world.  No matter the occupation, technology is used daily in the workplace, and is becoming an ever-present part of our lives. Knowing how to use technology efficiently, appropriately and ethically is not just a key career skill, but will increasingly be an essential part of being a good citizen in society.
  • Foster empathy and prevent cyberbullying.  Giving clear guidelines on appropriate online interaction and etiquette can help young people to determine what is right and give them crucial skills for responsible, respectful communication.
  • Develop information and research literacy.  All the information we could ever need is just a few clicks away – but how do we know what is factual and useful, and what is fake news or spam? Digital literacy skills not only empower students to use technology, but to use it effectively and efficiently.
  • Ensure online safety and security.  Students who have learnt how to protect themselves, their identities and digital footprints online can use technology safely and confidently.
  • Create awareness about healthy digital habits.  Technology can be addictive and have negative effects on one’s health (e.g. increased anxiety, eye strain, and ergonomic issues). Students who understand the risks of online use, how to use technology productively, and how to limit its damaging effects will be empowered to protect themselves against the detrimental effects of technology.

Incorporating digital citizenship into the classroom

There are many ways to weave digital citizenship into your classroom. You could embed these themes in your daily lessons; or you may decide to hold special workshops or group discussions.

However you choose to teach digital citizenship, Snapplify is here to help with any questions or support you may need. After all, giving young people a strong grasp of these concepts is a gift that they will use every day, for the rest of their lives
